The importance of oracy and critical thinking in digitally literate primary schools
Emma Goto is a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at the University of Winchester's Institute of Education. She spent over a decade working as a leading ICT teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) in primary schools in Hampshire before moving into higher education. Emma believes that education should make children think. We need children to develop the ability to engage critically with technology and digital media, to develop as responsible digital citizens.
As a practising teacher, Emma predominantly taught in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Emma teaches on the initial teacher education programmes at the university. From EdTech to PedTech: changing the way we think about digital technology
Dr Fiona Aubrey-Smith was named in 2024 as one of the Top 5 Visionary Women in Education. Fiona is an award winning teacher, leader and academic with a passion for supporting those who work with children and young people. She is the Founder of PedTech and Director of One Life Learning.
Fiona works closely with schools and trusts, professional learning providers and EdTech companies. She is also an Associate Lecturer, PhD Supervisor and Consultant Researcher at a number of universities, and sits on the board of a number of multi academy and charitable trusts. Co-author of the best selling book From EdTech to PedTech: changing the way we think about digital technology, Fiona is a regular contributor to events and publications about Education, Pedagogy and Education Technology. Fiona is a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, and has been awarded Fellowships by RSA, NAACE and the HEA. In 2023, she was made a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Educators and in 2024 granted Freedom of the City of London.

What does Digital Literacy look like in KS1?
Rachel Coultart is a primary classroom teacher with 35 years experience and has been a Computing Subject Lead for the last 10 years.
She delivers NCCE Computing courses to teachers as a Lead Professional Development Lead for STEM Learning and through the University of Hertfordshire. She is also a visiting lecturer at Brunel University training PGCE students in Computing. As a CAS Community Leader, CEOP Ambassador and Barefoot volunteer, she believes digital literacy skills are vital for everyone. Rachael is passionate about seeing technology used effectively in all classrooms and takes every opportunity available to share this passion with others.
